Palazzo Pepoli — Museum of the History of Bologna

Palazzo Pepoli is a museum of Bologna’s history housed in a imposing medieval palace on Via Castiglione, a short walk from Piazza Maggiore. Built by the powerful Pepoli family, who ruled the city in the 14th century, its fortress-like exterior is a reminder of an era when wealthy families shaped Bologna’s politics as well as its streets.

Inside, the story spans the city’s Etruscan and Roman roots, its medieval university and its later transformations. Multimedia displays, maps and reconstructions bring context to the towers, porticoes and traces of canals visitors encounter around Bologna. The palace itself is part of the appeal: allow time to notice its courtyards, staircases and vaulted spaces as you explore.

Visit early in your trip to get more out of the historic centre, and allow around 90 minutes to two hours. Check current opening hours, ticket prices and exhibition access before setting out, as arrangements can change. The palazzo is easy to reach on foot from central landmarks and makes a useful stop on a rainy or particularly hot day.
