Palazzo del Podestà

Palazzo del Podestà stands on the north side of Piazza Maggiore, at the heart of Bologna’s historic centre. Built in the early 13th century as the seat of the podestà, the magistrate who governed the medieval commune, it is one of the city’s most important civic buildings. Its Renaissance façade, remodelled in the late 15th century, rises above an arcaded ground floor, with the Torre dell’Arengo overhead.

The palace is best appreciated from the square, where its long façade forms part of a remarkable ensemble that includes the Basilica di San Petronio, Palazzo d’Accursio and nearby Palazzo Re Enzo. Beneath the building, the vaulted Voltone del Podestà has a celebrated acoustic quirk: two people standing in diagonally opposite corners can whisper toward the walls and hear one another across the passage.

Palazzo del Podestà is an easy walk from Bologna Centrale, roughly 20 minutes along Via dell’Indipendenza. Come early to try the whispering corners when the passage is quieter, or visit in the evening when Piazza Maggiore is at its liveliest. Interior access depends on exhibitions and events, so check current arrangements if you hope to go inside.
