Civic Medieval Museum

The Civic Medieval Museum (Museo Civico Medievale) occupies Palazzo Ghisilardi Fava, a Renaissance palace on Via Manzoni, a short walk from Bologna’s Piazza Maggiore. Its arcaded courtyard, vaulted rooms and stone staircases make a fitting setting for a collection that traces the city’s medieval and Renaissance life.

The museum is especially strong on Bologna’s history as a centre of learning. Carved tomb monuments depict university scholars teaching their students, preserving lively glimpses of the medieval classroom. Other highlights include the imposing bronze statue of Pope Boniface VIII, made around 1301, alongside illuminated manuscripts, ivory carvings, weapons and works in precious metals.

This is a rewarding museum in Bologna for anyone curious about the people and ideas behind the city’s towers and university. Allow around 90 minutes for the collection, and wear comfortable shoes for the historic floors and stairs. Check current opening hours before visiting, as schedules can change; the museum is easily reached on foot from the city centre.
