The Topography of Terror is a documentation centre and museum in central Berlin, built on the site of the former headquarters of the Gestapo, SS and Reich Security Main Office. From here, key institutions of Nazi rule directed persecution and mass murder across Europe. Standing on the ground where these organisations operated gives the history an unsettling immediacy.
The permanent exhibition examines the people and institutions behind Nazi terror through photographs, documents and personal accounts. Its approach is clear and unsensational, asking visitors to consider not only the victims of violence but also the officials who organised and carried it out. Outside, an exhibition traces the history of the site beside a surviving stretch of the Berlin Wall, adding another layer to the story of the city.
Entry to the Topography of Terror is free. Allow at least two hours to read and reflect rather than rush through, and bring weather-appropriate clothing for the outdoor displays. The museum is a short walk from Kochstraße U-Bahn station and can easily be combined with a visit to nearby Checkpoint Charlie.
