Barceloneta Beach is Barcelona’s best-known urban beach, a broad stretch of sand where the Mediterranean meets the old seafaring neighbourhood of La Barceloneta. Swimmers, sunbathers and beach volleyball players share the shore, while a busy promenade runs alongside it, linking the beach with the wider waterfront.
The neighbourhood behind the beach was laid out in the 18th century, in part to house residents displaced by the construction of the Ciutadella fortress. Its narrow streets and modest apartment blocks still hint at a working-class maritime past, though tourism has transformed much of the waterfront. Step inland for seafood restaurants and a closer look at the neighbourhood beyond the sand.
Come early in summer for a quieter patch of beach, or visit later in the day for a stroll along the promenade. Keep an eye on belongings, as theft can be a problem on busy days, and check the beach flags before swimming. Barceloneta metro station is within walking distance, though the journey to the sand takes you through the neighbourhood.
