Barceloneta Beach is Barcelona's most famous stretch of sand, a 1.2-kilometre arc of golden shoreline that frames the city's eastern edge where the Mediterranean genuinely laps against an urban neighbourhood. It sits at the foot of the Barceloneta district, a tight grid of 18th-century fishermen's apartments built on a triangular spit of land to house workers displaced by the construction of the Ciutadella citadel. That working-class DNA still flickers in the neighbourhood behind the beach, even as the waterfront itself has become one of the most visited strips of coastline in Europe.
