Tirta Empul is one of Bali's most sacred Hindu water temples, built around a natural spring that Balinese Hindus believe was created by the god Indra himself. Dating back to 962 AD, the temple complex sits in the village of Tampaksiring near Ubud, and its name translates roughly to 'holy water spring' — a name that does exactly what it says. The spring-fed pools have been drawing pilgrims for over a thousand years, and walking in, you get the immediate sense that this place exists on its own terms, indifferent to tourist schedules.
The ritual purification ceremony, known as melukat, is the beating heart of the site. Devotees move methodically through a series of carved stone spouts — each one associated with a specific blessing, from cleansing bad luck to healing illness — submerging themselves beneath each flow in turn. It is genuinely moving to witness, and visitors are permitted to participate in the purification ritual themselves, provided they come respectfully. You'll need to wear a sarong and sash, both of which can be rented at the entrance, and it's worth understanding even a basic outline of the ritual before you step into the water.
The temple grounds themselves are layered and lovely, with koi-filled inner pools, moss-covered shrines, and banyan trees that frame the whole complex in deep green. Above it all sits the presidential palace — Istana Tampaksiring — which Sukarno had built in the 1950s, a strange modern footnote to an ancient place. The late morning tends to bring tour groups, so arriving when the gates open (around 8:30am) gives you a quieter experience and better light for photographs.
A few practical notes: avoid visiting during major Balinese Hindu ceremonies when the temple is closed to non-worshippers out of respect for devotees. Skip the swimsuit and treat the water ritual as a cultural participation rather than a spa experience. The complex has a clear one-way walking route, which makes navigation easy even without a guide — though hiring a local guide adds genuine depth to what you're seeing.
