Tegallalang Rice Terrace is a landscape of stepped paddies carved into a lush valley north of Ubud, Bali. Narrow paths wind between the fields, offering views across the layered hillsides and a closer look at a landscape still shaped by farming.
The terraces are part of Bali’s long tradition of subak, a cooperative irrigation system in which farming communities and water temples coordinate the flow of water. Recognised by UNESCO as part of Bali’s cultural landscape, subak reflects a Balinese Hindu philosophy that connects the wellbeing of people, nature and the spiritual world.
Visit early for cooler temperatures, softer light and fewer crowds. Wear shoes with good grip, as paths and steps can be steep or muddy, and carry some cash for entrance or path-access fees. The paddies change with the planting cycle, so their colour can range from vivid green to freshly harvested brown.
