Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is a lush Hindu temple complex and wildlife sanctuary in the heart of Ubud, Bali. Stone paths wind beneath towering trees and past moss-covered sculptures, while long-tailed macaques groom, forage and patrol the grounds with remarkable confidence.
Known locally as Mandala Suci Wenara Wana, the forest is a living sacred site cared for by the Padangtegal community. Its three temples include Pura Dalem Agung, Pura Beji and Pura Prajapati; their origins are traditionally associated with the 14th century. Offerings and ceremonies are reminders that the sanctuary is more than a scenic backdrop, while conservation work adds another dimension to a visit.
Come early for a quieter walk before the busiest tour groups arrive. Keep food out of sight, secure glasses and other loose belongings, and never touch or feed the macaques; follow staff instructions if an animal approaches. Wear shoes with good grip, as paths can be uneven and slippery after rain, and respect signs restricting access to temple areas.
