Lempuyang Temple is a complex of Balinese Hindu temples on the slopes of Mount Lempuyang in eastern Bali. Among the island’s most important sacred sites, it forms part of the Sad Kahyangan, a group of temples central to Balinese Hindu tradition. Pilgrims have worshipped here for centuries, and ceremonies remain part of life at the complex today.
Most visitors come first to Pura Penataran Agung Lempuyang, where a split gate frames Mount Agung when the sky is clear. The famous reflection seen in many photographs is created with a mirror; there is no reflecting pool at the gate. Beyond the photo spot, forest paths and steep steps lead towards the upper temples, offering a more strenuous encounter with the mountain and its sacred landscape.
Arrive early for the best chance of a clear view, though queues for photos can still be long. Visiting the upper temples involves a demanding climb of roughly 1,700 steps, so bring water and wear shoes with good grip. A sarong and sash are required; dress respectfully and remember that this is an active place of worship.
