Maiden Tower rises above the southeastern edge of Baku’s Icherisheher, or Old City, its cylindrical stone walls and projecting buttress unlike anything else in the historic quarter. Around 29 metres tall, it is one of Azerbaijan’s most recognisable monuments and part of the UNESCO-listed Walled City of Baku.
The tower’s origins and purpose remain subjects of debate. Its surviving structure is generally associated with the 12th century, though some researchers suggest that parts may be older. Theories about its use range from a defensive stronghold to a site connected with ancient religious or astronomical practices. Local legends add another layer to its enduring mystery.
