The Flame Towers are three curved glass skyscrapers rising above Baku, their flame-shaped silhouettes unmistakable against the Caspian Sea. Completed in 2012, the complex combines a hotel, residences and offices, making it a working part of the city as well as its most recognisable modern landmark.
Their design draws on Azerbaijan’s identity as the “Land of Fire”, a name linked to natural gas fires and a long history of fire worship in the region. After dark, LED displays animate the towers with flames, the Azerbaijani flag and other images—a vivid contrast to the historic streets of Baku’s Old City below.
For a close view, walk up to Highland Park, where paths and terraces also offer sweeping views across Baku Bay. Come around sunset to see the skyline in daylight before the towers illuminate. The funicular can make the climb easier, though it’s worth checking operating hours; the towers are best enjoyed from outside, as the buildings are not generally open for sightseeing.
