The Tree of Life in Bahrain is a solitary mesquite tree rising from the desert near Jebel Dukhan, around 40 kilometres south of Manama. Its broad, twisted canopy stands out against the pale sand, making this living monument one of the island’s most memorable sights.
Estimated to be around 400 years old, the tree has long prompted questions about how it survives in such an arid setting. Deep roots may help it reach underground water, while local stories connect the site to the Garden of Eden. That mix of natural resilience and folklore gives a visit its appeal, even if there is little else around it.
Come in the late afternoon for softer light and cooler temperatures, and bring water, especially in summer. A car is the most practical way to reach the site; consider pairing the drive with a visit to Al Areen Wildlife Park. Treat the old tree gently: avoid climbing on it or marking its bark.
