The Pearling Path in Muharraq traces the history of Bahrain’s once-thriving natural pearl trade through a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The roughly 3.5-kilometre walking route connects historic buildings across the old city, from merchants’ houses and shops to mosques and the seafront near Bu Mahir Fort.
Before oil transformed Bahrain’s economy, pearl diving supported a complex society of divers, merchants, craftspeople and families. Restored courtyard houses, carved wooden screens and wind towers offer glimpses of the wealth the trade brought to Muharraq, while the route’s quieter lanes reveal the neighbourhood that grew around it.
Start at the Pearling Path Visitor Centre for context and a route overview, then allow time to explore on foot rather than rushing between landmarks. Visit in the cooler morning or late afternoon, wear comfortable shoes and carry water. Check opening hours before setting out, as access to individual buildings can vary.
