Vondelpark is Amsterdam's great communal living room — 47 hectares of lawns, ponds, and winding paths that the city has claimed entirely as its own. Named after the 17th-century Dutch playwright Joost van den Vondel, it was laid out in the English landscape style in 1865 by the Zocher family, initially as a private park for the bourgeoisie of the Oud-Zuid neighbourhood. That exclusivity didn't last long. Today it draws around 10 million visitors a year, making it one of the busiest urban parks in Europe, yet it somehow absorbs the crowds without ever feeling like a theme park version of itself.
