The Anne Frank House on Prinsengracht is one of those rare places where history stops being abstract and becomes devastatingly real. This is the canal-side warehouse where Anne Frank, her family, and four others hid from Nazi persecution for just over two years between 1942 and 1944, before being discovered and deported. The building survives almost exactly as it was, and walking through the concealed bookcase entrance into the Secret Annex is a genuinely affecting experience — cramped, dim, and quietly suffocating in a way that no textbook ever quite manages to convey.
