A'DAM Lookout is an observation deck atop the A'DAM Tower on Amsterdam's north bank of the IJ. Built in 1971 as Shell's headquarters, the tower has since become a hub for music, restaurants and nightlife, reflecting Amsterdam Noord's transformation from an industrial waterfront into a creative district.
From roughly 100 metres up, the Amsterdam skyline takes on a different shape: the canal ring curves around the historic centre, while the IJ and the city's northern neighbourhoods spread out below. The outdoor terrace gives visitors panoramic views, and the optional Over the Edge swing sends thrill-seekers out beyond the building's edge.
Take the free ferry from behind Amsterdam Central Station to Buiksloterweg; the short crossing is part of the experience. Book ahead, particularly for weekends or the swing, and check the weather if the outdoor terrace is your priority. Late afternoon is a good time for photography, with softer light over the city and water.
